Stowmarket is a working market town that has grown in distinct phases — Victorian terraces and commercial buildings in the town centre, post-war council housing across significant parts of the western side, and 1970s–80s private development along Combs Lane and the northern fringe. Each phase of building brought different roofing materials, and each now has different maintenance requirements.
